With a population of more than one billion people, India is the second most-populous nation in the world — and the fourth-largest world economy. Despite recent economic prosperity, approximately 70 percent of India's citizens live in rural communities with limited, if any, access to treated water. The state of rural water resources can be gauged by the fact that in 2004, there were 10 million reported cases of diarrheal diseases in rural India. Inadequate access to safe drinking water results in waterborne diseases that affect millions of Indians annually, over 75 percent of whom are children under the age of five.India has been a major focus area for WaterHealth International since 2005, when WaterHealth's first pilot community-water systems were first installed there. WaterHealth India has installed over 200 WaterHealth Centres, the majority of which are in Andhra Pradesh. New initiatives in other states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are now underway, bringing ownership of these "micro-utilities" within reach of hundreds more communities in rural India.
