Installed Capacity of WHI’s tsunami relief systems in Sri Lanka now enough to serve over 56,000 people with safe drinking water.

WaterHealth International is pleased to announce that, as of May, 2006, the company had installed 26 of the 50 tsunami relief water purification units earmarked for that country. Products specially designed to serve both the immediate and long-term needs of survivors of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami in Sri Lanka have been installed in a variety of settings, including schools, clinics, mosques, temples and newly-built permanent settlements.

"All people are very thankful for this system. Other people came and left after the tsunami, but we feel confident that WaterHealth is here to stay,” said Mr. M. Mubarak of Kattankudi in the Batticaloa District, where several installations have been made. These installations have been accomplished in spite of the challenges posed by the ongoing tensions between the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers, which have forced many organizations conducting relief efforts out of the Batticaloa area.

WHI is partnering with several organizations in final phase of the program, including Habitat for Humanity, and the Sri Lankan Government’s Task Force on Permanent Housing, with an emphasis on installations in permanent housing programs that are being constructed through both groups.
