First WaterHealth Centre Inaugurated in Afuaman
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(December 12, 2007) Afuaman, West Ga District, Ghana - WaterHealth International (WHI) today inaugurated its first WaterHealth Centre in Ghana. Dr. Tralance Addy, president and Chief Executive Officer of WaterHealth International flew to Ghana to inaugurate the system. He was joined by Mr. Sam Asare, Director of World Vision Ghana, area officials, and hundreds of area residents. The facility is located in Afuaman, a rural community in the Ga West District. WHI has nearly 600 installations of its water purification and disinfection systems around the world.
"I am pleased to witness our first endeavor in Ghana come to fruition. As a son of Ghana, this project holds special significance for me," Dr. Addy said. "This has been truly a team effort among government officials, World Vision Ghana and WaterHealth and I am confident that it will be the first of thousands in the country and West Africa."
"We at World Vision see first-hand the impacts of waterborne diseases in rural Ghana and strive to provide solutions to communities that are sustainable", said Sam Asare, Director of World Vision Ghana. "We believe this type of system will have a tremendous impact in the reduction of such diseases by providing water of the highest quality to people living in remote areas who do not enjoy the convenience of pipe-borne water. We look forward to partnering with WaterHealth on future installations."
Approximately two billion people worldwide have little or no access to safe drinking water. Millions of people around the globe rely on ponds, streams, and other exposed and untreated sources for their drinking water. Infectious waterborne organisms cause billions of diarrheal illnesses and millions of related deaths around the world each year. Often, infants and children are the hardest hit.
WaterHealth Centres provide the highest quality potable water at the tap, and meet the clean water needs of communities with low overall cost of installation and operation. They incorporate an award-winning ultraviolet disinfection technology, UV Waterworks™ that is energy efficient, and effective against a broad range of microbial pathogens and viruses that can be found in water.
Each WaterHealth Centre is built under a model that facilitates community acquisition and ownership of the facility. The Centres are operated by local residents who are trained and supervised by WaterHealth to maintain the highest quality standards. For the Afuaman project, WaterHealth has partnered with World Vision and the District Chief Executive of Ga West, the Honorable Mr. Quartey-Papafio, for community outreach and education about the importance of clean, potable water to a family's health and future.
